LG has outdone it this time, introducing the LG KU990 / LG Viewty - a 5.1 megapixel camera phone Schneider Kreuznach lens and excellent imaging capabilities. Very classy large touchscreen, camera flash, image stabilization, photo editing and single-click video uploading. Not very sure about this phone’s video resolution but equipped with optical credetials from the people behind Kodak lenses, it sure makes alot of sense how this phone could capture moving images.

Mobile Gazette:
The “U” in KU990 should indicate that this is a 3G device, and you can reasonably expect to see a multimedia player, web browser, email client and all the usual features. You can safely assume that the KU990 / Viewty will be competing directly against the N95, where the LG has the advantage of a touchscreen but is unlikely to have GPS.

Verizon Wireless Satellite Phone Services

Posted on January 22nd, 2008 in Verizon Wireless Satellite Phone Services by admin

A satellite telephone, satellite phone, or satphone is a mobile phone that communicates directly with orbiting communications satellites. Depending on the architecture of a particular system, coverage may include the entire Earth, or only specific regions.

The mobile equipment, also known as a terminal or earth station, varies widely. A satellite phone handset has a size and weight comparable to that of a late 1980s or early 1990s mobile phone, but usually with a large retractable antenna. These are popular on expeditions into remote areas where terrestrial cellular service is unavailable.

A fixed installation, such as used shipboard, may include large, rugged, rack-mounted electronics, and a steerable microwave antenna on the mast that automatically tracks the overhead satellites. Satellite phones have notoriously poor reception indoors, though it may be possible to get a consistent signal near a window or in the top floor of a building if the roof is sufficiently thin. The phones have connectors for external antennae that are often installed in vehicles and buildings.

Some satellite phones use satellites in geosynchronous orbit. These systems can maintain near-continuous global coverage with only three or four satellites, reducing the launch costs. However the satellites used for these systems are usually very heavy (approx. 5000kg) and therefore very expensive to build and launch. The major satellite systems in civilian use are Inmarsat and Thuraya. The satellites sit at an altitude of about 22,000 miles and therefore a noticeable delay is present while making a phone call or using data services.

The disadvantage of geostationary satellite systems is that many areas even where a large amount of open sky is present the line of sight between the phone and the satellite is broken by obstacles such as steep hills and forest and the user will need to find higher ground before being able to use the phone. This is not the case with Low Earth Orbit (LEO) services - even if the signal is blocked by an obstacle one can wait a few minutes until another satellite passes overhead.

Satellite Phone features include:

  • An international voice mailbox is standard with all rentals and available worldwide
  • Send text messages to other satellite phones (160 character limit applies)
  • Send e-mail to any e-mail address (160 character limit applies)
  • Free Text Messaging Service - Friends, family and colleagues can send a text message to your satellite phone at no cost to you or them. Use this link to send a message to a satellite phone

Rank 4 - Motorola RAZR2 V8

images53.jpg

The Motorola RAZR2 V8 has a completely redesigned User Interface (UI) so consumers can search contacts even faster. This eliminates duplicate entries for the same person while allowing contacts to have multiple numbers. The main menu is customizable, so consumers are never more than 2-3 clicks away from favorite applications, and even messaging is easier; automatically recognizing what type of message consumers are sending. The RAZR2 V8 also ‘talks’ to consumers by speaking the interactive menu, contact lists, emails and messages aloud - a feature developed for people with visual impairments, but convenient for in-car use. Without opening the phone, RAZR2 users can rely on the large external screen to read messages and reply with pre-programmed text messages.

Motorola RAZR2 V8 Features
* Innovative CrystalTalk technology for better call clarity
* Access to digital music, a real-time point-to-point video feature that allows another wireless customer to ‘See What I See’ and up to 2 GB of on-board memory for approximately 1,000 songs
* External texting including pre-programmed messages with the phone closed
* Full HTML Web browsing and email access
* A sharper profile - two millimeters thinner than previous models
* Vacuum metal finishes and chemically hardened glass including the largest external display in its class
* A stainless steel internal frame to provide strength and durability
* Greatly enhanced dual screens give consumers the largest-in-its class 2.0-inch external screen for crisp picture caller ID and readable texts and a 2.2-inch internal screen with twice the resolution of the original RAZR

With 3.2 megapixels, an auto-focus lens with no optical zoom, and a built in flash, the camera is very similar to the Sony Cybershot P32 and Canon Powershot A300 from the later half of 2003, albeit with much thinner dimensions.
